According to Reuters.com, rescue workers quickly arrived at the Marsandiz train station just outside Ankara to free trapped passengers and recover the bodies of those who died under the wreckage of the accident.

The train had been traveling toward Konya from Ankara, but it was not scheduled to stop at Marsandiz. As the train rumbled toward the station with light snow on the tracks, it struck another engine inspecting the area head on at around 6:30 a.m. local time.

Turkish Transport Minister Cahit Turhan said three engine drivers and six passengers were killed in the crash. It remains unclear how fast the trains were moving when the collision occurred.

At least two cars derailed during the accident, hitting the station’s overpass, which then collapsed on the train. In total, there were 206 passengers on board at the time of the accident.

The Ankara state prosecutor’s office announced it has launched an investigation into the crash.
