Fallout 76 is a game that Bethesda hopes will live on for years after its release next week. But it won’t be fuelled by the usual modding community this time around. Bethesda will be creating all of the Fallout 76 post-launch content in-house, and it’ll be funding all of this development with in-game purchases, otherwise known as microtransactions.

Bethesda has now revealed just what these microtransactions in Fallout 76 will entail, showcasing the Atomic Shop storefront for the first time. Users can purchase packs of ‘Atoms’ with real-world currency and then spend on goodies in-game.

The bad news is there appears to be a heck of a lot of things available to buy. The good news, if it can be called that, is that all appears to be cosmetic in nature. Bethesda has said before that Fallout 76 MTX will be cosmetic-only, and there are no pay-to-win mechanics, stat boots, or shortcut packs. There are also no lootboxes. You pay for what you want in Fallout 76, and none of it is strictly necessary, or indeed vital.

All in, Fallout 76 will offer seven different types of cosmetic content that can be paid for through microtransactions. These are as follows:

  • Apparel
  • Skins
  • C.A.M.P.
  • Styles
  • PhotoMode
  • Emotes
  • Icons

All of the sections are fairly self-explanatory. There’s clothing to be bought, weapon skins, base building cosmetics, new character appearance styles, emotes, poses, player character icons and custom styles for character creation/tweaking. “Aside from finding outfits as you explore, or crafting them at workbenches, the Atomic Shop can help you kick off a few costumed capers of your very own,” explains Bethesda. “Not only can you peruse a plethora of new outfits, you’ll be able to acquire other items like weapon skins, armor skins, emotes, décor and more.”

If you are averse to spending more money after the $60 purchase, Bethesda has said Atoms can be earned in-game through completing specific challenges. These challenges will be continually updated and the greater the challenger, the larger the reward. We’d love to know just how grindy this process is, but it’s not something we’re likely to know for sure until launch.

Fallout 76 is out on November 14th for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
