Bohemian Rhapsody: Brian May reveals one thing Freddie Mercury would have HATED | Films | Entertainment |
The film has delighted devoted fans and simultaneously annoyed critics who think it shies away from the harsher realities of Freddie’s life. His Queen bandmates are the only ones who really know the truth, meanwhile the international box office has already roared past half a billion dollars. Brian May himself has hit back at the naysayers and revealed what he thinks his much-missed friend would have made of it all. He also admitted the one thing that Freddie “would have found difficult.”

Asked what Freddie would have thought of a film being made about his life and whether or not it shows a fair balance of what he was really like, May said: “I think he would have felt it was a fair cop, really.
“It shows all his greatness and all his fallibility and insecurity – the whole bit. I think it shows him very truthfully and not sycophantically, but in a way that appreciates his talent. Because he was sure was unique.
“I’ve never met anybody like Freddie in my life, before or since, and it’s probably not going to happen again.”
May added the film highlighted something Freddie would not have embraced.

Although he was a consumate and iconic showman, able to command attention in a short pop video or full length concert, Mercury would not have enjoyed making a film himself, even if it was all about him.
May told Louder Sound: “He didn’t have the patience. He was offered a residency in the West End at one point, and he said, ‘Yeah, I’ll do it. How many shows a week?’
“They said, ‘Eight.’ And he said, ‘I’ll do a couple.’
“He didn’t like repeating stuff. Patience was not one of Freddie’s virtues. I think he would have found it difficult turning up every day on the set. I don’t think that would have lasted long [laughs].”

Ultimately nobody can know Freddie’s thoughts, but May is sure the rest of the band and the fans feel it has done its remarkable subjcet justice.
He said: “It satisfies us. It makes us feel something… I’ve seen it hundreds of times now, in fragments and eventually coming together, and it still gets me, I must say. It’s very emotional.’
