TIMESOFINDIA.COM | Jun 2, 2019, 06:48PM ISTNEW DELHI: There have been several fake viral messages doing rounds on social media and WhatsApp groups claiming that PM Narendra Modi has announced free laptop scheme under ‘Make in India’ initiative. These messages have links of fraud websites that have been created to cheat people and claim that free laptops are being distributed in celebration of BJP’s victory in the recent Lok Sabha polls. These websites include: These websites include: ‘http://modi-laptop.sarkaari-yojana.in’, ‘www.modi-laptop.wish-karo-yar.tk’ and ‘http://modi-laptop.wishguruji.com’.

The government has denied that there is no such scheme and all websites/messages making such claims are false. In this regard, an FIR too was registered recently under 66D IT Act.

After technical investigation Police has arrested Rakesh Jangid of Nagaur, Rajasthan. The accused is an IIT (Kanpur) post-graduate of 2019 batch. He is said to have created the website along with his brother to earn web advertising revenue. Further investigations are underway.

As for these websites, the ‘https no laptop://modi-laptop.wishguruji.com’ website seems to have been taken offline. The other website — ‘modi-laptop.sarkaari-yojana.in website’ — is still live. A banner on the site claims that the government is offering free laptops to 2 crore youth. It asks users to share details like name, mobile number, age and their state. It also has PM’s photograph just below the ‘Submit’ button. The page though currently says ‘Registrations Closed’ is still accepting name and other details. On filling the same, it opens another page that asks ‘if the user is taking benefit of PM’s free laptop scheme for the first time’? Post this, it asks users to share the details about this scheme with 10 WhatsApp groups. This is said to be mandatory step to get registration number for enrollment in the scheme.

Another similar fake website ‘http://solor-panel.sarkaari-yojana.in’ is claiming to offer people free solar panels under PM’s Solar Panel scheme.
