However, earlier this year, the Cupertino-based tech giant settled its long-standing dispute with Qualcomm which led to Intel announcing that its exiting the modem business. However, a new report now reveals that Apple may still be interested in Intel’s modem unit.
According to The Information, Intel is still looking to sell its smartphone modem business. The report states that Apple is particularly interested in Intel’s German business. However, the report also states that the deal is still unclear and may fall through, that is if both the companies are in talks. If Apple does acquire Intel’s business then the company will be getting a lot of top engineers who could develop 5G modems for the company.
Earlier in April a Wall Street Journal report had also mentioned the rumoured deal. What added fuel to fire was Apple hiring several key executives from Intel since the turn of the year.
As for 5G iPhone is concerned, since Apple has made up with Qualcomm, it is expected that the next few iPhones will be powered by tech from Qualcomm. It has also been reported that Apple is developing its own modems but they are likely to see the light of the day after a couple of years.
Speaking of iPhones, a lot of rumours and leaks are pointing to features that may come in the 2019 variants of the smartphone. For instance, a report states that the next edition of iPhone XR variant will have a bigger battery. Two 2019 iPhones will have a triple-rear camera setup whereas the XR could have a dual rear camera setup. These are so far rumours only and a lot will be clearer once the launch date is nearer. September 2019 is when the new iPhones will be launched.
