Hardcore dungeon crawler The Bard’s Tale IV: Barrows Deep has a release date on PC. The RPG from inXile Entertainment and Brian Fargo, writer of the original 1985 The Bard’s Tale, will be launching on September 18th.

It’s been 30 long years since The Bard’s Tale III arrived. The series defined computer RPGs and helped lay the template for dungeon crawlers as we know them today. The Bard’s Tale 4 takes players on a journey back to the mythical land of Caith, treading a familiar path of first-person adventuring, party-based combat, puzzle solving and maze-like dungeons.

A lot has changed in the last 30 years though, and The Bard’s Tale IV: Barrows Deep has been developed in Unreal Engine 4 and utilises photogrammetry based upon Scottish architecture and geography. In short, Bard’s Tale 4 is going to look very nice indeed, and the world that players will be exploring will have a Gaelic twang.

For our console brethren, the good news is that The Bard’s Tale IV: Barrow’s Deep has also been announced for Xbox One and PlayStation 4. The bad news is there’s a bit of a wait. While TBT4 will arrive on September 18th on PC, the console version is due later in 2018.

Between Bard’s Tale IV and Warren Spector’s Underworld Ascendant, dungeon dwellers are going to have plenty to sink their teeth into once September rolls around.
