THQ Nordic has announced the first of its three planned pre-E3 announcements, kicking things off with SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated. It’s already getting a few folks hot under the collar at the prospect of Spongebob Bikini Bottom being made with updated visuals, high-resolution support, an online horde mode (what?), and split-screen play.

THQ Nordic call the Battle for Bikini Bottom a “cult classic”, and it’s now being remastered for the modern age. SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated is quite the genius name, I’ll give them that, and it also works wonders for upping my word count.

To be honest, the game is absolutely beyond me. There have been seemingly dozens of SpongeBob games over the years, although I didn’t know any of them were actually particularly well-liked, let alone regarded as a gaming classic. It turns out  SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom has built up quite the following though, so it must have something to its porous ways. Perhaps this is all similar to the Aladdin games, which were pretty well regarded back in the day despite being movie tie-ins.

It is SpongeBob though and our itsy, bitsy, cuboid friend has garnered a heck of a fanbase over the years. The original game was a level-based 3D action-adventure with three playable characters (SpongeBob, Patrick, Sandy) and all sorts of platforming action. Thanks, YouTube.

SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated will be coming to PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch in 2020.
