The 2016 Doom was an absolutely top-dollar reboot. Id Software achieved the near-impossible with that game, reimagining a resolutely old-school shooter franchise for a modern audience without losing its core essence. It’s one of the greatest single-player shooters ever, so following up on that is a tall order.

Doom Eternal looks in many ways like more of the same, although that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Id Software has been busy making a number of small yet key gameplay tweaks to freshen up the formula, such as armour being an earnable resource in the same way as health, or the addition of an air dash which opens up even greater flow to the combat, or a grappling hook which can pull the Doom Slayer close to enemies within an instant.

Potentially the biggest change though appears to be the setting. Doom Eternal is once again a battle with hell’s denizens, but we’ll also be coming back to Earth and a trip to heaven itself to even the scales between good and evil. I would pay top dollar for a climactic showdown with god.

We also got a look at Doom Eternal’s token multiplayer component, which looks, er, a whole lot less impressive. Battlemode is a 2v1 multiplayer mode in which a fully stocked Doom slayer takes on two -player-controlled demons over three rounds of FPS combat. There’s a fighting game vibe to its structure that may appeal to some folks, although it doesn’t look like Doom Eternal’s main attraction.

Doom Eternal will be coming to PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, on November 22nd.
