It’s exciting times ahead for Destiny 2, as unbelievable as that sounds. Bungie has parted ways with Activision-Blizzard and is now free to go as wild and crazy as it wants without a suit breathing down their neck muttering ‘how can we bleed their bank accounts dry’.

Bungie has perhaps gone a little bit too wild though – Destiny 2 and its upcoming Shadowkeep expansion will be moving to Steam from Battle.net for the first time, and the huge update will pump Destiny 2’s installation size up to a gargantuan 165GB. To the best of our knowledge, this would make Destiny 2 the largest video game of all time.

Destiny 2 is currently around an 85GB install on PC and 90GB consoles, rising to an estimated 105GB when it comes to Steam on October 1st. Throw the Shadowkeep expansion into the mix and Bungie’s promotional email informs players Destiny 2: Shadowkeep will require an estimated 165GB of hard drive space. It’s unclear whether this is just the PC version or also the console editions.

“165 GB hard drive storage space required as of 10.01.19. Subject to change. Requires Internet,” reads the blurb.  “Significant elements and functionality may require online platform subscription, sold separately. Using software constitutes acceptance of Destiny Software License Agreement at www.bungie.net/sla.”

For those hoping to install Destiny 2: Shadowkeep onto an SSD this could be a major issue. Fortunately, 3D NAND storage has ever been cheaper. If you’re the market for a larger SSD, a 500GB model can now be had for as low as $60.

As for what Shadowkeep includes, the expansion adds a new raid, a trip to the Moon for more story missions, new weapons and gear, a new dungeon, and a season pass for ‘Season of the Undying’. In terms of size, it’s been compared to Destiny 1’s final expansion, Rise of Iron.

Destiny 2: Shadowkeep comes to PC (via Steam), Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on October 1st.
