UPDATE: We now know Tim Willits’ fate after parting ways with id Software this month. The legendary Quake and Doom designer left after 24 years with the FPS specialists and has now revealed he’s the new chief creative officer at Saber Interactive.
Saber Interactive has been one of those studios known for lending a helping hand over the years, assisting with Halo: The Master Chief Collection, porting The Witcher 3 to Switch, and, in a nice crossover which probably led to this move, working on Quake Champions with id Software itself.
More recently though, Saber Interactive has really made a name for itself with World War Z. It’s that rarest of beasts – an Epic Games Store exclusive which has managed to achieve genuine success on the store.
“Being with a studio for 24 years, it’s really hard to leave,” said Willits during an interview with Fortune. “It’s almost like a marriage, for lack of a better description… But I saw how Saber, as a team, was starting to grow and expand and pick up teams and studios. It was a good time to move over.
“The agility of small teams and the opportunity to get stuff done quickly can’t be overstated. I’m not saying anything bad about Bethesda—I love them—but smaller teams are exciting and fun. When someone has a good idea, we jump on it. If it doesn’t work out, we change it quick.”
He’s certainly quite the talent for Saber Interactive to scoop up and should have plenty of know-how to share for the future of World War Z and beyond.

Id Software veteran and all-round first-person-shooter authority Tim Willits has announced he’ll be leaving the studio after 24 years of game development. Willits’ enviable CV includes level and scenario design for Doom Ultimate, Doom 2, Quake, Quake II, and Quake 3, as well as studio director for Doom (2016), Quake Champions, and the upcoming Doom Eternal.
It would be fair to say Willits has had a huge impact on the world of first-person shooters, sticking to his resolutely old-school guns while the industry chases trend after trend.
“After 24 years, I’ve decided to leave id Software after QuakeCon,” wrote Willits in an announcement. “I’ve been extremely lucky to work with the best people in the industry on truly amazing games,’ Willits announced via Twitter, referring to id Software’s annual convention which takes opens on July 25th. ‘QuakeCon has been an unbelievable part of my journey and I look forward to seeing everyone at the Gaylord Texan.
“All of the games currently in development are in very good hands, my departure will not affect any planned releases. id Software is packed full of amazing talent that will continue to develop (long into the future) some of the best shooters in the world.”
Willits has promised he’ll be announcing his future plans after QuakeCon next week. From the sounds of things, he’s far from finished in the games industry so we’re certainly keen to find out what this industry legend is cooking up next.
His final project, Doom Eternal, will be launching on PC and consoles on November 22nd.
